Architect Ken Liu, who was instrumental in improving the earthquake safety of California’s hospitals, has died. He was 62 years old.

After the Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes caused billions of dollars in property damage, Liu was asked by the California Healthcare Association to revise hospital construction guidelines. This resulted in improvements to more than 100 hospitals across the state, making them better suited to withstand seismic activity

Liu co-founded the Los Angeles architectural firm Lee Burkhart Liu in 1986 alongside Ken Lee and Erich Burkhart. The firm has won more than 35 American Institute of Architects awards and was named firm of the year in 2011.

Liu died on May 1. He was born in China and came to Los Angeles to study architecture at UCLA. Liu is survived by his son Ryder, brothers Albert and Frank, former wife Patricia, as well as many friends and extended family members.

The cause of death was not immediately available.
