Nathanson made much of his fortune in the $3.7 billion sale of his Falcon Communications in 1999 to Charter Communications, then closely held by Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen. He founded Mapleton Investments, which manages a range of global ventures valued at more than $1 billion including equities, fixed income, private equity, real estate, art and direct investments. Mapleton’s real estate arm, Mapleton Properties, has more than $400 million in assets across several sectors including multifamily, office and industrial properties in four states.
THE BUZZ
Recent real estate deals include properties in Portland, Ore. and Glendale. Mapleton has been a longtime investor in waterless urinal maker Falcon Waterfree Technologies. Nathanson and wife Jane donated $50 million in art to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2015, and commissioned a Jeff Koons sculpture. He serves as co-chair of the Pacific Council on International Policy, vice chair of the National Democratic Institute and a trustee of the Aspen Institute.
