MICHELLE COOKE: Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP – Partner

Michelle Cooke is a partner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, where she co-chairs the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. For over 20 years, she has helped intellectual property owners build, protect and monetize their assets domestically, internationally and online. She focuses on branding, online content and brand presence, and international protection/enforcement. Cooke has particular experience with the entertainment and media, multimedia platforms, consumer products, apparel and software industries.

Clients seek Cooke’s advice on establishing, expanding and exploiting their brands. This work includes evaluating and addressing risks that threaten brand value or create liabilities, as well as developing strategic plans to maximize brand value. She negotiates licensing, merchandising and distribution agreements, and handles compliance issues and disputes with licensees/licensors.

RICK RICHMOND: Jenner & Block LLP – Managing Partner, Los Angeles Office

Since joining Jenner & Block in the spring of 2009 to establish its Los Angeles office, Rick Richmond has been instrumental in growing the firm’s top-tier reputation in California as well as leading the firm’s trade secrets practice.

Jenner & Block’s Los Angeles office opened its doors in the depth of the recession with just Richmond and one other lawyer. Under Richmond’s leadership as office managing partner, the office today ranks among the 60 largest firms in Los Angeles. Richmond led the Jenner & Block team in securing the $940 million trade secrets jury verdict in favor of Epic Systems Corp., one of the leading health care software companies in the US, against Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which is a part of one of the largest industrial conglomerates in India. After a two-week trial, a jury found that TCS stole Epic’s trade secrets.

ELLISEN S. TURNER: Irell & Manella LLP – Partner

A highly regarded intellectual property litigator, Ellisen Turner has helped clients secure victories in patent litigations that have resulted in more than $3 billion in total client compensation. He has also established himself as a leader dedicated to serving others and enriching the future both within his firm and the greater community.

For clients, Turner has achieved victories in IP matters across the federal courts, in the International Trade Commission and in international arbitration, netting billions of dollars in value for Irell clients. He currently represents Razor USA in a case that went to trial in February 2017 in the ITC, where he is seeking an exclusion order that would ban imports of any unauthorized “hoverboards.” Turner also serves as lead counsel for Razor in multiple district court patent infringement cases around the country involving such devices.

KAREN VOGEL WEIL: Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP – Partner

Karen Vogel Weil is a Knobbe Martens partner in the Los Angeles office. She has experience in all aspects of intellectual property litigation, including representing plaintiffs and defendants in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret disputes. She has both trial and appellate experience.

Weill is also recognized as an authority in the area of patent damages. Recently, she led the damages portion of a trial for Masimo Corp., which led to a jury award of almost $467 million. This was the largest IP award of 2014. She has spoken extensively on patent litigation issues, including patent damages issues. Additionally, she has been involved in several professional organizations throughout her career including being an active member in the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO) where she is currently Secretary of the Damages & Injunctions Committee.
