Health maintenance organizations are under attack on almost all fronts from doctors and lawyers, from consumer groups and legislators. Even Wall Street is piling on, criticizing HMOs for lower-than-expected profit levels.

Yet despite all the furor, most Californians are pleased with their HMOs with 83 percent saying they are “satisfied” or “very satisified” with their health plan, according to an independent study conducted for the state task force probing managed health care.
