Beats Music to Shut Down

Beats Music will shut down at the end of the month, reports Fortune.

The streaming music service has been supplanted by Apple Music, which launched in June and as of last month had signed up 6.5 million paying subscribers. Apple Inc. saw no reason for the two services to run in parallel, so the company is encouraging subscribers to switch over to Apple Music.

Apple bought headphone maker Beats Electronics of Santa Monica for $3 billion last year, $500 million of which was reportedly paid to acquire Beats Music, a subsidiary with some separate investors.

About 200 of Beats’ 700 workers were reportedly told their positions were temporary and would be eliminated in the months following the acquisition. A spokesman said many of those workers were extended job offers with Apple.
