California could become the first state to raise the smoking age as lawmakers are backing proposals that would raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21 as well as hike cigarette taxes by $2 a pack, the Los Angeles Times reports. The bills would also ban the use of chewing tobacco in at pro baseball games and recreational league games and prohibit electronic cigarettes from being smoked in public places where smoking is not allowed.
