Joining the growing number of broadcasters seeking to expand beyond television, DirecTV has launched Yaveo, its first Internet-only subscription video service, which will feature Spanish-language programming in conjunction with partners that include Univision Communications and Viacom.

The El Segundo satellite television giant will offer the service at a Netflix-equivalent price: $7.99 a month. Neither a DirecTV satellite subscription nor a contract is required.

Yaveo, which translates to “now I see,” will include TV shows and movies from studios and networks including Univision’s suite of networks, Nick en Español and RCN.

The service, launched Monday, is only available in the United States.

Share of DirecTV rose 98 cents, or about 1 percent, on Monday to close at $86.45.
