THE MONEY: After death in 2011 of John Anderson, the Business Journal is keeping wife, Marion, and family on list based on previous years’ valuations. The fortune he built stayed in the family, managed through holding company Topa Equities.

BUZZ: Before his death at 93, family patriarch Anderson had handed over day-to-day responsibilities of running Topa to three of his four children, John E. Anderson Jr., daughter Judy and son William. Each is active in the company and serves on the board, along with Anderson’s second wife, Marion. Marion, a philanthropist, has sat on board of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles since 1989. Stepped down as co-chair in July 2012. Before John’s death, Andersons made a $50 million gift to help the Hollywood hospital finish an inpatient wing named in the couple’s honor. Son of a Minneapolis barber, Anderson went to UCLA on hockey scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in business. Decades later, he gave $17 million and endowed two chairs at the graduate management school, renamed the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Just before his death, family donated an additional $25 million, the largest such gift in the school’s history. After a stint in the Navy during World War II and earning an MBA at Harvard University and law degree at L.A.’s Loyola University, Anderson started law firm in 1953.
