THE MONEY: Nonagenarian with Midas touch told Business Journal that value of wide real estate holdings took hit. Auto dealerships also off. But diversification of Topa Equities holding company limited damage. Insurance companies, and beer and soft drink distributorships performing well.

BUZZ: Has slowed down a bit in his 90s, but exercises regularly and comes into Topa’s Century City headquarters weekly. Says he’ll never retire. Despite commercial leasing downturn, company benefits from some recognizable addresses. Topa Financial Plaza in Oxnard has the two tallest buildings in Ventura County. Anderson said low debt-to-equity ratio on Westside real estate holdings protected him from recession sell-offs. Son of Minneapolis barber went to UCLA on hockey scholarship and earned bachelor’s degree in business. Enlisted in Navy during World War II. Earned Harvard MBA and Loyola law degree. Started law firm in 1953 and a few years later launched Ace Beverage Co., which won rights to distribute Budweiser in L.A. area. Anderson and wife Marian big supporters of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles; she is on board. Anderson contributes to charitable foundations and namesake UCLA Anderson School of Management.
