TERRY W. BIRD, 63

FIRM: Bird Marella Boxer Wolpert Nessim Drooks & Lincenberg, PC

LAW SCHOOL: UCLA

CLIENTS: Broadcom Special Litigation Committee, former CEO of Brocade Communications Systems (as co-counsel), former CFO of Qwest Communications, Inc., former CFO of New Century Financial Corp.

YEARS IN PRACTICE: 38

Reason I’m a Lawyer: To test myself against the best, and to feel like I made some difference in others’ lives.

Most Challenging Case: Representing the Alaska Public Utilities Commission Staff in the Trans Alaska Pipeline case against some of the best lawyers in the country when I was just getting started with my career in private practice.

My Colleagues Don’t Know:

I ran the Boston Marathon in 2 hours, 53 minutes; I introduced the reverse Margarita to Anchorage, Alaska.

RICHARD MARMARO, 58

FIRM: Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP

LAW SCHOOL: New York University School of Law

CLIENTS: Greg Reyes; William Ruehle (former CFO of Broadcom); Planned Parenthood; UBS

YEARS IN PRACTICE: 33 years

Reason I’m a Lawyer: My mother gave me two career choices: a doctor or a lawyer. Since I did not like the sight of blood, I chose the latter.

Most Challenging Case: The Reyes stock option backdating case. Being the first criminal stock options backdating case to go to trial, it presented factual and legal issues that had never been addressed before. We felt that we were under a microscope because there were so many other backdating cases waiting in the queue, watching how our trial unfolded.

If I Weren’t an Attorney: I would be a history teacher and part-time basketball coach at a high school on Long Island. And I’d probably supplement my income by running a summer camp in the Pocono Mountains.

Bucket List: Playing a round of golf at Augusta and taking a world cruise (117 days off in a row).
