Google Apps Can Work for L.A. Just Mind the Passwords

Should the city of Los Angeles ditch much of its current information-technology infrastructure for a bundle of e-mail and office-software services supplied by Google?

Washington, D.C. , the municipality, not the federal government , has already done it. A proposal before L.A.’s Information Technology Committee would bring Google Apps to replace aging systems with off-site, Web-based equivalents developed and run by Google.

With city budgets for IT spending on staff, hardware and software probably suffering along with the rest of the economy, the prospect of paying Google a flat fee to run many of L.A’s critical computing services is enticing.
