Northrop Grumman Corp. said Tuesday that it received a $276 million U.S. Air Force contract to upgrade communications systems on fighter jets and other aircraft.

Northrop’s Battlefield Airborne Communications Node provides aircraft with real-time battlefield information and can translate among incompatible communications systems. The work will be performed at Northrop’s facilities in San Diego.

The Los Angeles defense contractor said it will install the system on two Bombardier BD-700 Global Express aircraft and two Global Hawk Block 20 unmanned aerial vehicles. It also will continue support for aircraft that already have the system.

Northrop shares closed up 96 cents, or 2 percent, to $45.22 on the New York Stock Exchange.
