NBC Universal’s Universal Studios Consumer Products Group last week created a new division dedicated to mobile phone-based entertainment, called Universal Mobile Entertainment.

The mobile division, headed by Universal executive Jeremy Laws, will focus on licensing Universal’s films and television content and creating new content for a range of mobile platforms.

Universal currently has more than 60 deals worldwide with partners including I-play, Gameloft and Starwave Mobile.

The company expects to see substantial revenue growth in mobile entertainment this year with the launch of 30 games and a range of graphics, video clips and voice ringers. Content will be provided to major cellular carriers worldwide from Universal’s current library of film and television assets.

NBC Universal is 80 percent owned by General Electric Co. and 20 percent owned by Vivendi Universal.
