Stocks Mixed on Interest Rate Fears

Stocks closed mixed Tuesday on fears of rising interest rates. Investors sold as bond yields remained high, government data showed wages rising and a Federal Reserve official warned more interest rate hikes may be needed.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 22.10, or 0.2 percent, to 10,980.69. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index dropped 2.38, or 0.2 percent, to 1,275.88. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 17.65, or 0.8 percent, to 2,268.38.

Local movers were led by J2 Global Communications Inc., which gained 3.6 percent to $45.46, Keystone Automotive Industries Inc., which rose 2.1 percent to $45.75, and OSI Systems Inc., which climbed 3.8 percent to $22.58. On the down side, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. fell 6.7 percent to $78.95, Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. lost 4.1 percent to $82.11 and Public Storage Inc. slipped 2.9 percent to $77.17.
