Business Leaders Make More Time For Their Families

Entrepreneurs are so frantic building their companies they have little time for their families, right? Well, maybe not. According to a new survey from Business.com in Santa Monica, 80 percent of entrepreneurs surveyed said they have the same amount of, or even more, time for their families despite the difficulties of starting and running a business.

Jake Winebaum, founder and chief executive of Business.com and the father of two teen daughters, said his survey confirms his instincts: “We felt there was a new generation of business leaders who want to spend time with their kids.”

His survey was just an unscientific query of 311 business owners with children, whom Winebaum calls “fatherpreneurs.” When asked what motivated them to start their business, about 19 percent said they wanted financial success followed closely by 18 percent who said they wanted to build something. Nothing surprising there. But another 18 percent said they were motivated by the desire to spend more time with their families.

The fatherpreneurs said they felt they had two families one at home and the other at the office. But 59 percent said they felt closest to their home family. Only 14 percent said work came first; 27 percent ranked the two equally.

Winebaum said he intends to repeat the survey each year in time for Father’s Day, which this year is June 18.
