Malibu Film Celebration Betting on Festival Winners

You might not think the L.A.-area needs another film festival.

The backers of the nascent Malibu Celebration of Film do, however, and they’ve got a formula they hope will set them up for success.

“It’s a celebration, not a competition,” said Julie Nathanson of Rogers & Cowan, the firm handling the event’s publicity. “It’s going to be the winners of festivals from all over the world. Most of us don’t get to see those unless they make it to wide distribution.”

The aim is to allow Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters and industry members and film buffs the chance to see a large number of festival winners in once place before the Academy Awards nominations process gets started.

The inaugural event will run from Oct. 6 to 14, and it will showcase about 80 award-winning works from a variety of international film festivals. They will appear at venues throughout Malibu.

A non-profit effort, the celebration was two years in the making and has a target first-year budget of $250,000, which organizers are still trying to raise.

Sponsors include the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the City of Malibu and Pepperdine University, where some of the selections will be screened at night on the “Alumni Walk” lawn.

The Sloan Foundation’s sponsorship is earmarked for screenings related to science and technology, and will fund a seminar to be hosted by the creators of their selections, along with renowned scientists and engineers.

“These (events) are basically an alternate distribution circuit for independent films,” said Greg Beal, Nicholl Fellowships Coordinator for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. “The audience definitely offers an opportunity for the world of independent filmmakers.”

Kim Jackson, a festival consultant whose resume includes work on TriBeCa, Staten Island, Hamptons International and Global Peace festivals, is the executive director and will announce the film selections in August.

The festival directors are Bob Klein, Delores Rivellino, Michael Gose, Judith Gersten and Robert and Joan Chimento.

The celebration is not related to the existing Malibu International Film Festival, which is a competition festival that began in 1999.
