Young girls again showed their buying power at the North American boxoffice during the weekend, surprising the industry with the $21.1 million opening of Buena Vista Pictures’ dance movie “Step Up.”
That wasn’t enough to knock Sony Pictures’ “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” out of first place, but “Step Up” did stun with its opening gross, which made it a strong runner-up.
Paramount Pictures also delivered with its Sept. 11 film “World Trade Center.” With a three-day estimate of $19 million, the Oliver Stone-directed film has earned $26.8 million since opening Wednesday.
