Chain store sales fell in the first week of March, as severe weather helped to slow sales, a report said on Tuesday.

Sales in March to-date were down 1.0 percent compared with February. Sales at major retailers rose by 3.7 percent on a year-over-year basis for the week ended March 5, said Redbook Research, an independent company.
