Goodbye Howard Stern. Hello Diamond Dave?

Stern’s employer, Viacom Inc.’s Infinity Broadcasting, has been searching for replacements since the veteran shock jock, who anchors the morning schedule at L.A.’s KLSX-FM (97.1) and still commands high ratings, announced he would exit the broadcast airwaves at the end of the year to take his show to Sirius Satellite Radio.

Among the names mentioned in radio circles: David Lee Roth, former frontman of the hard-rock band Van Halen.

KLSX put Roth on the air earlier this year for three hours and his scattershot, stream-of-consciousness style has earned high marks from Infinity programming president Rob Barnett. KLSX Program Director Jack Silver, who apparently came up with the idea of giving Roth a tryout, declined to comment on the possibility of the rocker replacing the shock jock.

Roth’s tryout was broadcast from KLSX’s studios in Los Angeles. He has also performed on an Infinity classic rock station in Boston.
