Albertson’s Inc., Safeway Inc. and Ralphs Grocery Co. will pay $22.4 million to settle a class-action lawsuit by janitors who claimed they were improperly classified as subcontractors, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The money $4,500 to $9,300 per person will be split among about 2,100 janitors who worked at the companies’ stores from 1994 to 2001. The suit stated the workers were underpaid as a result of the classification.

The final hearing on the settlement in federal court in Los Angeles was postponed until February because Albertson’s hadn’t posted notices in its stores seeking class members as ordered by the court.
