Chinatown in San Pedro: L.A.’s Cultural Affairs Department is showing a series of old movies at the historic Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, a theater with an Art Deco interior that was recently restored. The first film in the series is “Chinatown,” showing at 8 p.m. on Aug. 5. Former Los Angeles Times film critic Charles Champlin will host the movie and there will be a special appearance by Robert Towne, the film’s screenwriter. The theater is located at 478 W. Sixth St.

Classic films: They were great then. They’re great now. One Colorado Courtyard in Pasadena rolls out its Best of Summer Film Series, playing the entire month of August. It begins with “Casablanca” on Aug. 3, followed by “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” on Aug. 4 and “Cinema Paradiso” on Aug. 5. The films will be shown outside, screened on the exterior wall of a historic building now occupied by Crate & Barrel. More information: (626) 564-1066.

Heart man: Singers Tony Bennett and Diana Krall team up at the Hollywood Bowl on Aug. 4 and 5. Bennett’s signature tune, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” was a double Grammy winner more than 30 years ago. He made his Hollywood Bowl debut in 1962. Photo album: A group of 100 documentary and experimental photographs by renowned photographer John Gutmann will be on display starting Aug. 6 at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The works reveal Gutmann’s fascination with American popular culture while capturing the social turbulence underlying life in the U.S. from the 1930s to the 1950s.
