Walt Disney Co. announced Monday it has reached a deal for future “Star Wars” video games to be developed by Electronic Arts, a Redwood City game publisher with significant operations in Playa Vista.

The announcement comes a month after Disney announced that the video game unit of its Lucasfilm division would no longer develop new games and instead would seek to license its properties to outside game-makers. About 150 staff workers were laid-off as part of the restructuring.

The new arrangement with EA is a multiyear agreement that will span all interactive platforms, such as consoles. Disney, meanwhile, retains the rights to develop new titles for mobile, social, tablet and online games. Disney purchased Lucasfilm in December for $4.06 billion.

John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive, said EA’s games will further popularize the “Star Wars” franchise.

“Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world,” he said in a statement.
