On-location filming in greater Los Angeles achieved its second-best year on record in 2017, according to a FilmL.A. report released Jan. 23.

According to FilmL.A, the official film office for the city, Los Angeles County and 23 other jurisdictions, 2017’s on-location filming decreased 3.4 percent from 2016. The data also said that L.A. area sound stage occupancy remains above 92 percent.

The numbers paint a rosier picture for television and commercial location shooting than for feature film shooting

Commercial production increased 9 percent last year to 5,548 shoot days over 2016, the highest FilmL.A. has observed. While TV location production dropped 7.6 percent to 15,218 shoot days over 2016, the category finished last year 2.1 percent above its five-year rolling average.

Meanwhile, on-location feature film production plummeted 19.8 percent in 2017 to 3,901 shoot days over 2016. Analysts note in the report that while the total number of shoot days is down, the economic value of feature film projects may be increasing over time.

“Our ability to achieve and sustain a high level of production over the past few years is substantially due to the California Film and Television Tax Credit, which is creating thousands of jobs and returning high economic benefits to California,” FilmL.A. President Paul Audley said in a statement.
