DreamWorks Reaches Netflix Content Deal

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. will bring its feature film characters to the small screen in a deal to produce original content for streaming through Netfilix Inc., the companies announced on Monday.

The deal between the Glendale animation studio and Netflix, of Los Gatos, calls for 300 hours of new programming as part of a DreamWorks initiative to expand television production and distribution. The original series will be based on the box-office hits “Shrek,” “Madagascar,” “Kung Fu Panda,” and “How to Train Your Dragon.”

The series are scheduled to begin airing in 2014.

DreamWorks Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said the deal with is an unprecedented commitment to original content for Internet television.

“Netflix is a visionary company that continues to redefine the way audiences watch television and it is a thrill to add to their growing momentum,” said Katzenberg, in a prepared statement.

In February, DreamWorks Animation announced it was creating an original Netflix series based on characters from this summer’s release, “Turbo.” The series begins airing in December.

DreamWorks shares rose 93 cents, or about 4 percent, to close at $23.74 on the Nasdaq.
