Rio de Janeiro isn’t the only city with drama this summer.
While the Olympics have brought together the world’s top athletes, the Sundance Institute’s Next Fest will bring together top independent artists in film and music this weekend at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel Downtown. The festival, which is in its fourth year, will premiere for the first time in Los Angeles six new films fresh off of their debut at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, along with select comedy shorts.
Each film is paired with a live musical performance or a conversation with the filmmakers and the luminaries that inspired them.
“Sundance Next Fest is a heat wave of new independent film,” said John Cooper, director of the Sundance Film Festival. “For our fourth year we’re mixing things up with more films and an outdoor entertainment venue, offering bigger and better opportunities for audiences to celebrate.”
The festival kicks off tonight with the Los Angeles premiere of “Lovesong,” starring Brooklyn Decker, Riley Keough and Jena Malone, along with a live musical performance by Shamir. Saturday’s lineup will feature the drama “Goat,” starring Nick Jonas paired with musical act Sunflower Bean. Sunday’s events include a master class on directing short films.
Next Fest is an extension of the popular Next section at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, which showcases stylistically adventurous and bold films, and has launched titles including “Tangerine,” and “Escape from Tomorrow.”
Tickets for screenings cost between $15 and $25. The master class is $75.
