Walt Disney Co. has expanded its partnership with Shanghai Media Group to create content for the Chinese market, the company announced Friday.
The Burbank entertainment and media company is adding television production, movie co-production, distribution and marketing to the operations it has in China.
Shanghai Media Group, a subsidiary of Shanghai Media & Entertainment Group in China’s largest city, owns and operates radio and television stations in the Shanghai area and other parts of China.
Early projects of the partnership include an animated series and Born in China,” a film now in production showcasing the country’s wildlife and natural beauty.
“Shanghai Media Group’s spirit of innovation, diverse platforms, digital destinations and assets provide unparalleled access to that entertainment in China,” said Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger in a prepared statement.
Early this year, Disney announced a partnership with Shanghai Media Group Pictures to produce Disney-branded films by pairing U.S. screenwriters with Chinese writers and directors. In December, Disney formed a joint venture with BesTV New Media Co. Ltd., a unit of Shanghai Media Group, on digital distribution of content.
Disney is not alone among Hollywood studios to partner up with Shanghai Media Group.
Warner Bros. Entertainment, in Burbank, announced last month a partnership with the Chinese company to invest in Chinese and other international film and television content.
Shanghai Media Group is also one of three Chinese companies in the joint venture Oriental DreamWorks with DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., in Glendale, to produce films and other content.
Disney shares closed up 6 cents, or a fraction of a percent, to $88.86 on the New York Stock Exchange.
