The Walt Disney Co. will launch an advertiser-supported Disney Channel in Russia next year after the company acquired a large stake in a Russian television network.

The Burbank entertainment giant received Russian government approval to buy a 49 percent of Seven TV Network. It will operate the business in conjunction with the network’s majority owner, UTH Russia. The Disney Channel in the United States is available as a cable channel.

“International expansion is a key strategic priority for our company and Disney Channel has proven to be invaluable in building the Disney brand around the world,” said Chief Executive Robert A. Iger in a Thursday statement.

Disney Channels Worldwide is comprised of 100 channels in 35 languages reaching 325 million households worldwide. In Russia, the Disney Channel will reach an estimated 40 million households, the company said.

Seven TV switched its content from sports to general entertainment last year, which improved ratings and revenues.

“Now it’s time for a new page in the network’s history,” said UTH Russia CEO Ivan Tavrin in a statement. “I am confident about the success of the Disney Channel and our long term partnership with The Walt Disney Company.”
