Warner Bros has reached a deal with Facebook to test a system to rent its movies on the popular social networking site.

The Burbank studio late Monday said that the 2008 film “The Dark Knight” will be the first movie in the test program, with other films available in the coming months. The film can be rented for $3 or 30 Facebook credits, a virtual currency used on the site. Users will be able watch titles in full screen, pause and resume the movie, and will have 48 hours from purchase to watch films.

The new service will take advantage of Facebook’s networking features, Warner said. The movie can be rented from its own Facebook fan page on the site, with users able post comments on movies and connect with friends while watching the movie.

“Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts,” Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, said in a statement.
