Shares of Dreamworks Animation gained 12 percent Monday as investors cheered the box-office results of the studio’s “Puss in Boots” movie.
The “Shrek” prequel about the sword-fighting cat sold $33 million worth of tickets in U.S. theaters during the weekend ended Nov.6, making it the top-grossing film for the second straight week. The movie has earned an estimated $75 million at the domestic box-office since its Oct. 28 release.
In a note to investors, Hudson Square Research analyst Maria Backer wrote that “‘Puss’ could have substantially longer legs than expected.”
The movie’s opening weekend disappointed Wall Street, causing a sharp drop in the Glendale animation studio’s stock. With Monday’s surge, the share price is only 2 percent below where it closed on Oct. 27, the day before the movie’s debut.
Shares of Dreamworks closed Monday at $19.57, gaining $2.08 cents in trading on the Nasdaq.
