Miramax Signs Streaming Movie Deal with Netflix

Miramax Films on Monday said that it had signed a deal with Netflix Inc. that will give the movie rental service’s customers streaming access to several movies in its library, including “The English Patient,” “Good Will Hunting” and “Pulp Fiction.”

Santa Monica-based Miramax and Los Gatos-based Netflix did not disclosed terms of the multiyear deal, which will begin in June for subscribers. Netflix made its name by mailing rental DVDs of movies to subscribers but in recent years had been building an online streaming library that has grown to more than 20,000 titles.

This is the first time Miramax titles will available through a digital subscription service. Walt Disney Co. last year sold the independent movie company founded by Bob and Harvey Weinstein for $60 million to Filmyard Holdings LLC, which is backed by local billionaires Tom Barrack and Ron Tutor. The new owners have been seeking a variety of distribution deals, as well as making plans for new productions.

“From day one, we’ve been very clear about the importance of digital and our desire to respond to the significant pent-up demand for our films — delivering to consumers whenever and wherever they want,” Chief Executive Mike Lang said in a statement. “This agreement is an important first step in our digital strategy.”
