On-location production days surged 16 percent in Los Angeles during the third quarter of 2011, FilmLA Inc. announced Tuesday. Increases came in features, television, commercials and small projects.

Feature film production soared 50 percent compared with the third quarter of last year. Non-profit FilmLA credited the growth to the $100 million California state film subsidy that was extended in September. State-subsidized projects accounted for 13 percent of feature production days this quarter.

Television production bumped up 5.8 percent during the quarter, due in large part to 100 new reality TV shows. That led to a 30 percent increase in reality TV production days for the quarter.

Drama production days fell by 20 percent for the quarter, due to incentive programs in other states taking the productions. Drama productions that received California subsidies accounted for 10 percent of area drama production days, FilmLA said.

Commercial production days were up 17 percent and production days for smaller projects, such as student films, grew 12 percent for the quarter.

FilmLA bases its data on permitted production days in the city of Los Angeles, unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County and other jurisdictions.
