Lions Gate scraps plan for Times Square entertainment center

Lions Gate Entertainment Inc. has abandoned plans for an indoor amusement center in New York City’s Times Square, a source close to the company confirmed July 3.

The decision to drop the two-year old plan was made by Lions Gate’s partner in the venture, Spain-headquartered leisure park operator Porques Reunidos, the source said, and does not reflect Lions Gate scaling back on its amusement park plans.

The Santa Monica-based studio announced earlier this week that it will open a theme park in Hengqin, China on July 31 that will feature attractions based on Lions Gate franchises including The Hunger Games and Twilight.

Lions Gate also has a theme park in Dubai, and has said it plans to open a theme park in South Korea next year.

Lions Gate has rebounded after a rough 2018 at the box office, thanks largely to the third installment of its John Wick franchise, which crossed the $300 million mark at the global box office last week.

The company’s stock, however, is at an eight-year low, closing July 2 at $12.68 per share.
