Walt Disney Co. on Wednesday said that its studio unit signed a deal with Imax Corp. to release three more 3D movies for Imax’s huge-screen theaters next year.
Walt Disney Studios and Imax said the first film will be “Mars Needs Moms,” which is scheduled to be released in March 2011. It will be followed by “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” in May and “Cars 2” in June.
Disney has had success preparing Imax versions of its hit films “Alice in Wonderland” and “Toy Story 3.” The 3D version of “Toy Story 3″ opened last weekend on 180 Imax theaters, out of more than 4,000 total U.S. and Canada theaters, and so far has contributed $8.4 million to the film’s overall gross of $110 million.
“The Imax experience adds another level of impact and excitement to a movie, and with these new films, made by some of the industry’s most innovative filmmakers, audiences are in for are real treat,” Chuck Viane, president of distribution, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures said in a statement.
Walt Disney Co. closed down 1 cents, or less than a percent, to $34.34 on the New York Stock Exchange.
