CalAmp Narrows Loss

CalAmp Corp. narrowed its loss in its fiscal third quarter, despite lower-than-expected sales of wireless communications equipment for the satellite TV market.

After the Tuesday markets closed, the Oxnard maker of wireless communications equipment reported a net loss of $200,000 (-1 cent per share) for the quarter ended Nov. 30, compared with a net loss of $1.3 million (5 cents) a year earlier. Adjusted net income was up 300 percent to $400,000 (1 cent), in line with the Wall Street consensus forecast

A 9 percent decrease in expenses softened the impact of a 3.7 percent fall in revenue to $29.6 million. Higher revenue in the wireless datacom segment – which serves utility, governmental and business customers – was offset by lower revenue in the satellite segment. Analysts had expected $30 million.

Chief Executive Rick Gold said the company was seeing strong demand for products related to local fleet vehicle management and in emerging applications, such as remote car start. Sales in the satellite TV market slowed as service providers revamped their requirements for new receivers and other products.

“Based on our current backlog and pipeline of opportunities, we expect our satellite shipments to begin rebounding and expect continued strength in our wireless datacom segment,” said Gold in a statement.

Shares earlier closed down 7 cents, or 3.5 percent, to $$2.93 on the Nasdaq.
