L.A. Moves Closer to Banning Sale of Fur

The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously voted for the drafting of legislation that will ban the sale and manufacture of fur-related products in the city.

The proposal was spearheaded by councilmembers Bob Blumenfield and Paul Koretz who also chairs the Personnel and Animal Welfare Committee.

Today’s vote directs the city attorney’s office to draft an ordinance that will prohibit the sale and make of apparel as well as handbags, shoes, hats, jewelry, among other products that use fur in whole or in part, in L.A.

“This is a big deal as Los Angeles is the largest city yet to do this,” said Kezia Jauron, spokeswoman for the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation. L.A. joins other California cities like West Hollywood, Berkeley and San Francisco that already have fur bans in place.

There may be some minor changes to the proposal as the city attorney’s office works on a final draft after which it will head back to the city council for approval and then to Mayor Eric Garcetti.

“It’s 2018 – there’s no excuse for being complicit in this inhumane and unnecessary trade. With this vote we are telling the world that Angelenos care about animal welfare,” Councilman Blumenfield said in a statement.

The fur ban will be phased in over a 24-month period from the date the ordinance goes into effect.
