New Regional Export Council to Aid L.A. Businesses

Aiming to give businesses an easier way to start exporting their goods to the world, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s office on Monday announced the creation of the Los Angeles Regional Export Council.

The council is a collaboration of the mayor’s office, the Port of Los Angeles, Los Angeles World Airports, universities and business groups.

The council’s goal will be to streamline export support programs in the region run by individual agencies, including separate export training programs run by the port, LAWA and the California Centers for International Trade Development.

“Each has their own programs that provide basic export training and resources, and the council will streamline those into an Export 101 program,” said Villaraigosa spokesman Teddy Davis.

He said the council will also coordinate forums and business development programs run by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and the USC and UCLA centers for international business education and research.

Villaraigosa announced the creation of the council Monday at CR&A Custom Banner in Los Angeles, a company that has exported to Latin America and the Middle East.

“We in Los Angeles are not waiting for Washington to create jobs,” Villaraigosa said in a press release. “We are launching the Los Angeles Regional Export Council to help local businesses find the export assistance they need to grow their businesses and create new jobs.”

The council will focus on boosting exports in 12 industries, including aerospace, computers, pharmaceuticals, energy and apparel.
