The Port of Long Beach and Long Beach City College have partnered up to launch a new training program to prepare students for jobs in the global logistics and supply chain industry.
On Aug. 8, city officials and the community college’s personnel gathered to officially launch the Port of Long Beach Maritime Center of Excellence at Long Beach City College. The port is making an investment of $60,000 to develop the center, which aims to train workers and build a pipeline of qualified workers for local businesses.
“It’s a chance to respond to industry needs now,” LBCC President Dr. Reagan Romali told the Business Journal. “The Center will offer training in supply chain management, warehousing, logistics, inventory control, cyber security, international trade, among other topics.”
The training sessions are projected to be between 30 hours and 60 hours and will take place in classrooms, field workshops and port-site work and will include case studies and operation of actual equipment, she added.
The community college is currently developing curriculum for the training and aims to have the first sessions offered by spring of 2019. Participants do not need to students at the college, trainings are open to all.
