The Chatsworth factory that once turned out Hot Pockets frozen sandwiches has been sold to a Chinese company that was the exclusive supplier of dumplings to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Nestle USA sold the 189,170-square-foot manufacturing facility at 9601 Canoga Ave. to Synear Food Holdings Ltd. of Zhengzhou City, China. The sale was completed for an undisclosed amount last month, according to real estate data provider CoStar Group Inc.
The food processing plant has been shuttered since last fall, when Nestle moved its Hot Pockets production to an expanding facility in Mount Sterling, Ky.
There was no immediate information available about Synear’s plans for the factory, but its frozen food is sold in supermarkets and other retailers throughout China. The company, founded in 1997, produces a variety of savory dumplings, pickled vegetable pork buns, onion pancakes and spring rolls, as well as specialty desserts such as steamed milk buns.
The Chatsworth production facility was built in 1960 on more than 7 acres at the corner of Canoga Avenue and Plummer Street. Nestle had been marketing the property for about 10 months at an asking price of $15.9 million, according to CoStar. David Harding and Walt Arrington, both brokers with CBRE, handled the transaction.
Nestle bought the property in 2002 from Chef America Inc. of Englewood, Colo., for $9.7 million when it acquired the Hot Pockets and Lean Pockets brands.
