Security equipment manufacturer OSI Systems in Hawthorne has won an $18 million order to provide cargo, vehicle and people scanning systems to the U.S. government.
The company’s Rapiscan cargo screening machines allow security checkpoints to scan for such contraband such as explosives, weapons and narcotics. The company also makes people-scanning machines that detect metallic and non-metallic weapons such as plastic explosives.
The company did not specify which agency of the U.S. government made the $18 million purchase.
In a statement, Chief Executive Deepak Chopra said the company’s technology “is capable of detecting threats hidden deep inside containers and vehicles and provides a detailed image highlighting the size and location of the potential threat.”
In late morning trading, OSI stock rose 92 cents, or 3 percent, to $29 on the Nasdaq.
