MGA Entertainment Recalls Toys from Acquisition

MGA Entertainment on Wednesday announced it was recalling 1.7 million Little Tikes toy tool sets and trucks, citing a choking hazard from the toy’s plastic “nails”.

The recall, done in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is for Little Tikes’ Workshop and tool sets that were sold between 1994 and 2004, prior to MGA’s 2006 acquisition of Little Tikes Co. The oversized plastic toy nails were also recalled in August 2009, but the new voluntary recall involves another 11 models.

“Any products with toy nails sold today by Little Tikes are not affected by this recall,” said the Van Nuys toy company, the maker of Bratz dolls.

MGA has reported that two children choked when a toy nail became lodged in their throats. Both children were treated in a hospital and recovered fully, the company said. The incidents took place prior to the 2009 recall.

The toy nails are about 3-1/4 inches long by 1-1/4 inch in diameter. They are red or blue and have a large round head, and below the nail head there is a plastic ridge, slightly smaller than the nail head and about an inch in diameter.

The company did not state how much the recall would cost.
