Billionaire Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa Cos. has invested $10 million in AquaHydrate Inc., a bottled enhanced-water company based in San Bernardino County.

AquaHydrate of Colton on Tuesday said the investment strengthens its balance sheet, and will enable an accelerated national rollout of the sports drink, which is comprised of purified alkaline water infused with electrolytes and trace minerals.

AquaHydrate is sold online and in more than 2,200 U.S. grocery, health and natural food stores. It has secured several endorsement and partnership deals, including being named the official sports beverage of the men’s and women’s USA water polo teams. The company’s board includes actor Mark Wahlberg, who was an early investor.

“AquaHydrate is one of the most exciting brands in the bottled water industry with great potential for future growth,” said Burkle, Yucaipa’s chairman, in a statement.
