Automated Industrial Robotics Buys Sewtec Automation
Offices: AIR parent company Ares Management Corp. is based in Century City.

Automated Industrial Robotics Inc., an industrial automation company based in Topanga, has acquired United Kingdom-based Sewtec Automation.

The transaction was funded by Century City-based global alternative investment manager Ares Management Corp., which started AIR to capitalize on the global automation market in January. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In its 40 years, Sewtec invented more than 7,000 industrial automation systems across a variety of industries including pharmaceutical, medical devices, food and beverage, personal care, pet care and e-commerce.

Mark Cook, co-managing director of Sewtec and newly appointed chief operating officer of AIR, called the transaction “an exciting new chapter in Sewtec’s long history,” in a statement.

“I believe AIR is the right partner for Sewtec as we look to grow our business with existing and new customers. We look forward to leveraging the skills and know-how across AIR to further our ability to invent innovative solutions that help our customers solve complex operational challenges,” Cook said.

With a drive to foster growth in industrial automation at a global scale, AIR said it targets companies “serving diverse end markets with strong operational histories and tenured management teams.”

Prior to this deal, AIR also acquired Totally Automated Systems in Detroit and Modular Automation located in Ireland at the same time as the company’s launch.

“We believe that sharing the respective strengths of Sewtec, TA Systems and Modular through AIR will help accelerate our businesses’ abilities to enhance efficiencies, drive technological innovation and deliver industry-leading automation solutions to our partners,” AIR Executive Chair Brian Klos and Chief Executive Darragh de Stonndún said in a joint statement.

The Sewtec deal cemented AIR’s global trajectory, with the company now serving three customer bases in the U.S., Ireland and the U.K.

Matt Cwiertnia, partner and head of the Ares Private Equity Group, said in a statement that this transaction “reinforces our shared goal of building AIR into a scaled player with a global manufacturing footprint.”
