Northrop Grumman Corp. said it received an Army contract valued at $296 million to continue development of a system that provides ground intelligence to soldiers. In addition, a news report said the Los Angeles defense contractor is considering selling an unrelated business unit.

The company, which is leading a team that includes General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin, said late Wednesday that the 30-month contract involves completing development of the Distributed Common Ground System for the Army’s brigade combat teams. The system provides individual soldiers high-tech tools in the field.

Separately, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Northrop Grumman Corp. is seeking a buyer for its advanced engineering and consulting operations. The TASC unit is based in Herndon, Va., employs about 5,000 and could fetch $1 billion, the Journal said, citing sources.

Private-equity firms are among the interested parties, the paper said, and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Credit Suisse Group AG are representing Northrop.

Northrop Grumman shares were down 32 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $47.56 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
