NASA Leases Drones from Northrop Grumman

0

Northrop Grumman Corp. has extended an agreement to provide two Global Hawk unmanned aircraft for science missions conducted by NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center.

The five year extension allows NASA Dryden to continue hurricane, atmospheric chemistry, radiation and other research activities originating from Edwards Air Force Base in the Antelope Valley and other locations.

The drone has a price tag of roughly $130 million. Terms of the deal were not released.

NASA Dryden, which began using the aircraft in 2008, built a permanent ground control station at Dryden where pilots control the aircraft. And, last year, NASA constructed a portable station at its Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia for use during hurricane research missions.

Northrop, based in West Falls Church, Va., manufactures the Global Hawk at its facility in Palmdale.
