Boeing plans to restructure its Military Aircraft division as it braces for drastic cuts in defense spending here and abroad through much of the decade.
The reorganization involves moving the unit responsible for the Long Beach-based C-17 Globemaster, built in Long Beach, from Seattle to a suburb of Philadelphia. Boeing said Tuesday they plan to cut 20 top-level executive positions in coming weeks as part of a longer-term plan to pare down defense spending as the wars Iraq and Afghanistan wind down.
A Boeing spokesman said other cuts will be made across all levels of Boeing’s Defense, Space and Security division in coming years, a move likely to affect the company’s workforce in Long Beach, Seal Beach and Huntington Beach. Nearly 10,000 are employed building the C-17 and researching space and satellite programs locally.
