Workers at the Boeing plant in Long Beach voted Wednesday night to accept a new contract and end a 30-day strike.

United Auto Workers Local 148, which represents about 1,700 assembly-line workers at the plant, said members ratified the proposed contract by a vote of 822 to 544. The new contract will improve health care and pension benefits for all union members.

The Long Beach plant manufactures the C-17 cargo plane for the U.S. military. The new contract guarantees labor peace at the plant for the next 52 months.

“The new contract recognizes our employees’ ongoing contributions to our success while enhancing the company’s ability to increase our competitiveness and keep the C-17 airlifter affordable so that we can win new work and extend the life of the production line in Long Beach,” Boeing said in a statement.

Workers will gradually return to work starting Thursday, Boeing said. The plant will be fully staffed by Monday.
