Jennifer Malloy this month joined Venable LLP’s office in Century City, where she will serve as counsel in the firm’s advertising and marketing group.
Malloy, who has lived in Los Angeles for 11 years, comes to Venable via Santa Monica-based Guthy-Renker, a marketing firm known for its collaborations with celebrities in developing skincare brands. There she served as in-house counsel and frequently collaborated with Venable.
“I was always very impressed by the legal work that I received from them,” she said in an interview. “I always got very practical business-oriented solutions from them, and their lawyers became trusted advisers. When it came time for a new adventure, they were one of the first firms I thought of.
“I was speaking to several firms and there are a lot of top-notch firms with advertising practices in the U.S.,” Malloy continued. “The culture here is great and I think it’s a great group of people.
A New York native, Malloy earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Amherst College in Massachusetts and her juris doctorate from the New York University School of Law.
At Venable, Malloy will advise clients on federal and state advertising laws and regulations. Her focus includes consumer-facing advertising for compliance purposes in both direct-response and retail sales channels, including television, radio, inbound telemarketing, websites, print, digital, social media and labels/packaging. She also negotiates transactions involving mergers and acquisitions, foreign restructurings, software development services, entertainment, book publishing and celebrity endorsements, according to the firm.
“I love advertising and marketing law. I love working with creative people. I think because I was in-house for so long, I have a really good understanding of what solutions people are looking for and what kind of practical advice they need,” she said. “I have a lot of experience building brands, especially around celebrities and famous people, and I also have in-depth experience working with subscription-based revenue models and direct-to-consumer experience.”
The firm lauded Malloy’s experience as being invaluable to its team moving forward.
“Jennifer has a reputation as a trusted advocate who provides strategic leadership to her clients and delivers consistent results,” Len Gordon, chairman of Venable’s advertising and marketing group, said in a statement.
