Joseph Russell recently retired as chief executive of Public Storage and now serves as a consultant in the transition. The company is in the midst of a move from Glendale to Frisco, Texas. As of the end of last year the company owned or operated 3,533 self-storage facilities in 40 states with approximately 258 million net rentable square feet in the United States. It also had a 35% common equity interest in Shurgard Self Storage Limited, which owns self-storage facilities in Europe and had roughly 18 million net rentable square feet as of the end of last year. In March, Public Storage announced an agreement to acquire National Storage Affiliates in an all-stock transaction valued at $10.5 billion. NSA’s portfolio has more than 1,000 properties and 69 million rentable square feet.
