As a physician, South African-born Patrick Soon-Shiong developed therapies for diabetes and cancer. The wealthiest Los Angeles County resident, he built his fortune by selling two companies he founded: generic drug company APP Pharmaceuticals for $4.6 billion in 2008 and Abraxis Bioscience in for $3.8 billion in 2010. Two years ago, his immunotherapy company, ImmunityBio Inc., received Food and Drug Administration approval for a drug to treat a type of bladder cancer; the drug has since received approvals in the European Union, the U.K. and Saudi Arabia. Soon-Shiong also owns the El Segundo-based publishing company for the Los Angeles Times, which he is working to take public.
