Julie Sprengel has been the top California executive for Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health since 2023. Based in Glendale, Sprengel oversees nearly 45,000 employees and 15,000 physicians across 29 acute-care hospitals and over 250 ambulatory care sites. She joined Dignity Health in 2017 as then the senior vice president for the Southern California service area. From 2019 through mid-2023, Sprengel served as chief executive of CommonSpirit Health’s Southern California division. At CommonSpirit, Sprengel helped establish a partnership with Charles R. Drew University School of Medicine and Science in Willowbrook to expand medical education opportunities for Black and other people of color; she has also helped establish nurse residency programs, expand population health services and launch new graduate-level medical education training. This year, she was appointed chair of the executive board of trustees for the California Hospital Association.
